Medication Management Q & A

What is medication management?

Medication management refers to the use of medications to treat symptoms of a disease. It involves prescribing, monitoring, and adjusting drugs so you get the best results and is an important part of psychiatric care. Psychiatric drugs alleviate symptoms, improving response to therapy.

However, there are many psychiatric medications, and no single drug works for all, even for people with the same diagnosis. As an experienced nurse and psychiatric practitioner, Wendy understands the benefits of psychiatric drugs and how they work, ensuring you get on the medication that can best help you.

Why do I need medication management?

Not everyone with a mental health condition needs medication management.

Wendy may suggest medication management if your mental health symptoms are moderate or severe or you’re not improving with therapy. Some of the mental health conditions Wendy treats include:

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Panic disorder
  • Depression
  • Tourette Syndrome
  • Substance use disorder (SUD)
  • Autism spectrum disorder

Some mental health conditions are chronic, like bipolar disorder and ADHD, and may require long-term medication management.

You may also benefit from medication management if you’re taking a psychiatric drug but feel it’s not working. Wendy has years of medication management experience and may change, reduce, or remove the medication.

When can I expect to feel better with medication management?

Most psychiatric medications take time to work, and it can take several weeks to experience improvements in symptoms.

When starting medication management, Wendy chooses a standard drug at the lowest possible dose. She schedules weekly follow-up appointments to monitor drug tolerance and your symptoms.

Wendy may change the medication, increase the dose, or keep everything the same based on your follow-up reports. Once you're on the right medication and dose that provides the best relief from your symptoms, your medication management visits are less frequent.

However, Wendy is always available and responds quickly to calls and messages in between scheduled visits.

When can I stop medication management?

You can stop medication management when both you and Wendy agree that your mental well-being is stable and you no longer need the psychiatric drug. Some people only need medication management for a few months, while others may benefit from medications for several months or years.

When discontinuing psychiatric medications, Wendy uses a weaning protocol that reduces the risk of a return of symptoms.
